On July 11, 2024, the Michelin Guide officially announced that Fujian will become the sixth destination in mainland China to receive its prestigious guide.
The Michelin Guide, first launched in France in 1900, began as a travel guide with maps and hotel recommendations. Today, it has evolved into a global authority in culinary rankings. Since its introduction to mainland China in 2016, Michelin has expanded to five major cities: Shanghai, Guangzhou, Beijing, Chengdu, and Hangzhou. Now, Fujian and Jiangsu are set to become the sixth and seventh regions to feature Michelin selections.
The guide will focus on three cities in Fujian—Xiamen, Fuzhou, and Quanzhou—highlighting local flavors and culinary culture. Michelin inspectors will evaluate restaurants based on five criteria: ingredients, cooking techniques, flavor harmony, creativity, and consistency. The first Michelin list for Fujian will be revealed at the end of 2024.
Fujian is also accelerating the development of its local cuisine through its "New Fujian Cuisine Innovation and Development Plan (2023-2025)," which aims to get more Fujian restaurants recognized by prestigious culinary guides like Michelin, Black Pearl, and Golden Wutong. In 2020, the high-end Fujian restaurant Meet the Bund in Shanghai became the first to receive a Michelin star.
