The School of Marine and Food Sciences at Quanzhou Normal University was established in March 2016, following the restructuring of the former College of Chemistry and Life Sciences. The school traces its origins back to 1959 when the Biology program was first established, marking over 60 years of educational history. In 2019, the school was honored with the "May 1st Pioneer Award" by Fujian Province.
The school currently offers four undergraduate programs: Biological Science, Food Science and Engineering, Biotechnology, and Marine Technology. It also offers graduate programs in Biology and Pharmaceuticals, with specializations in Food Engineering and Bioengineering. The "Biology" discipline is recognized as a key discipline by Fujian Province, while the "Food Science and Engineering" program is designated as an applied discipline. The "Food Science and Engineering" program is also recognized as a first-class undergraduate program and a featured specialty in Fujian. Additionally, the "Biological Science" program is considered a top-tier undergraduate program in the province. The "Marine and Food Industry Applied Innovation Talent Training Program," which integrates Food Science and Engineering, Biotechnology, and Marine Technology, is a model applied professional group in Fujian Province. The school focuses primarily on undergraduate education while actively expanding graduate education, collaborating with Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University and Fuzhou University to offer joint graduate programs in Biology and Pharmaceuticals (Food Engineering, Bioengineering).
With a clear educational mission, the school is dedicated to supporting regional economic development, particularly in Quanzhou and surrounding areas. It adheres to a "people-centered" approach to education, striving to improve talent cultivation and overall educational standards to meet the needs of local schools and industries in marine and food sectors.
The school employs 61 staff members, including 45 full-time faculty members, 6 laboratory technicians, and 10 administrative and student affairs staff. Among the faculty, there are 13 professors, 1 researcher, and 14 associate professors.
