Official Unveiling of Quanzhou's UNESCO "City of Gastronomy" Logo

—The Erythrina in Full Bloom: A Millennium of Quanzhou's Flavour Distilled

Quanzhou Online, 29 November (by reporter Hong Nana) — The Erythrina variegata, locally known as the Citong flower and celebrated as Quanzhou's city blossom, embodies the convergence of the city's millennia-old cultural heritage and its distinctive culinary traditions. Drawing on this symbolism, Quanzhou officially unveiled its logo as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy yesterday at Deji Gate Square in the historic city centre. The unveiling took place during the opening ceremony of the Chinese Culinary Showcase: 2025 China (Quanzhou) Maritime Silk Road International Food Week and the 2nd China (Quanzhou) Silk Road Street Food Carnival.

Centred on the Erythrina blossom, the logo features seven petals, symbolising Quanzhou's designation as China's seventh UNESCO City of Gastronomy. Its design integrates the flowing aesthetics of Maritime Silk Road textiles, the sweeping lines of Minnan architecture's iconic swallowtail roofs, and the forward-leaning silhouette of a traditional Fujian sailing vessel, collectively conveying both historical depth and a spirit of innovation. Beneath the emblem, chopsticks are subtly interwoven with flowering branches, reinforcing the logo's culinary focus. The colour palette draws on the vibrant "Citong red" of the blossom alongside the earthy hues of Quanzhou's characteristic red-brick architecture, employing a bold visual language to articulate the city's distinctive gastronomic identity.

The development of the logo began following Quanzhou's admission to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as a City of Gastronomy and underwent multiple rounds of review and refinement by expert panels comprising scholars, designers, and cultural specialists. As the core visual symbol of Quanzhou's culinary culture, the logo is expected to enhance the city's international visibility as a global gastronomic destination, inviting audiences worldwide to experience and understand Quanzhou through its flavours.
