Quanzhou, China – April 17
At the Global Travel Agents (Fujian) Conference and the Tourism Promotion Event for Countries and Regions along the Maritime Silk Routes, the Joint Initiative on Promoting Multicultural Tourism along the Maritime Silk Routes (Quanzhou) was officially unveiled.
In 2023, Chinese President Xi Jinping formally announced the establishment of the Silk Road Tourism Cities Alliance at the Third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. The Alliance was founded to uphold the Silk Road spirit of "peace and cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, mutual learning, and mutual benefit." It provides a collaborative platform to foster international friendship and practical cooperation in the tourism sector. To date, 63 renowned cities from 28 countries—including Malaysia, Iran, Cambodia, Türkiye, and Morocco—have joined the Alliance.
The countries and regions along the Maritime Silk Routes are endowed with rich cultural heritage and abundant tourism resources, offering vast opportunities for international collaboration. The Alliance is committed to maximising its inclusive, participatory, and internationally oriented framework to foster multicultural tourism, deepen intercultural understanding, and promote shared prosperity.
On the occasion of this global gathering in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, the Alliance launches the following Joint Initiative to Promote Multicultural Tourism along the Maritime Silk Routes:
Strengthen Collaborative Partnerships for Mutual Benefit
Through flagship events such as the Alliance Annual Forum, Silk Road Dialogue, Global Travel Agents Conference, and Joint Exhibitions, member cities will strengthen policy coordination, resource integration, market connectivity, industrial collaboration, and information sharing across the international tourism sector.
Develop Regional Brands to Enhance Global Visibility
By co-creating premium, theme-based tourism products and curated international travel routes, and hosting cultural programmes such as artistic residencies, themed exhibitions, and dialogue forums, the Alliance aims to enrich global understanding of Silk Road and Maritime Silk Routes cultures. These efforts will raise the profile and impact of multicultural tourism brands across participating regions.
Provide Intellectual Support for Sustainable Growth
The Alliance will facilitate capacity-building through workshops, training sessions, expert consultations, and field research. With a focus on technological innovation and integrated development, the goal is to empower tourism industries to achieve high-quality, resilient, and sustainable urban growth.
Together, let us advance the vitality of Silk Road tourism cities and make meaningful contributions to the global cultural and tourism landscape.
