National Culinary Expert Zhang Qiongyu
Zhang’s culinary journey began in 1996 when she enrolled at Hongxing Vocational School. The following year, she began practicing in the culinary industry and took a keen interest in food carving, investing in books and resources to refine her craft. She developed her own distinctive carving technique, the "Seven Knife Shaping" method, and won first place in Quanzhou’s inaugural culinary competition. Her passion for the art led her to return to Hongxing Vocational School as a food carving instructor. After successfully passing a rigorous evaluation, she became a full-time faculty member in 2009. Over the past two decades, she has mentored more than 3,000 students.
Zhang’s career spans over 25 years, balancing hands-on industry practice with teaching. Despite not holding an advanced academic degree, her dedication to culinary mastery has earned her widespread recognition and numerous awards. She has mentored students who have gone on to achieve national accolades, including gold and silver medals in national culinary competitions. Zhang is the embodiment of the “craftsman educator” — an individual who strives for excellence in their own work while nurturing the next generation of culinary talent.
Her passion for teaching is evident in her commitment to professionalism and integrity. In an era where speed often takes precedence over quality, Zhang selflessly shares her expertise with her students and colleagues, with no expectation of personal gain. Her greatest motivation lies in the belief that her craftsmanship can inspire and positively impact those around her. For Zhang, craftsmanship is not merely a skill; it is a core professional value that every educator should uphold. She believes that true education nourishes the soul, much like spring rain fostering growth in nature. The ultimate reward for Zhang is witnessing her students use the skills they have acquired to support their families, contribute to society, and become exemplary members of their communities. This, she believes, is the true essence of teaching.
