"What a surprise—I thought the free meals were just part of a trial opening, but the volunteers told me it's a long-term programme. Now I don't have to worry about lunch anymore. I'm truly grateful!" said a local resident with a smile.

At noon on August 21, more than 50 elderly residents gathered at the newly opened Yuhua Community Canteen on Nanshan South Road in Quangang District, Quanzhou, where they enjoyed hot, freshly prepared vegetarian lunches at no cost.

The canteen was fully funded and established by Ms. Zhuang Yanhua, a local philanthropist, and is jointly operated by the Quangang District Volunteer Association. It is dedicated to providing free, nutritious vegetarian meals to senior citizens and disadvantaged groups.

Warmth and Order in Every Detail

By 11 a.m., the canteen was already bustling. Most diners were elderly, joined by a few sanitation workers and people with disabilities. On that day, the menu featured braised noodles and tomato-tofu soup. Guided by volunteers, diners queued neatly at the serving counter, taking portions according to their needs. "The noodles taste just like home cooking," said 73-year-old Ms. Zhuang. "Even those of us with weak teeth can eat comfortably. It's much easier than cooking at home."

Volunteers at the Heart of Service

According to Wu Haixiang, head of the Quangang District Volunteer Association, the canteen was created to address food security challenges faced by local seniors and vulnerable groups. After Ms. Zhuang proposed the idea and funded the initiative, the project received wide recognition and community support. A volunteer service team—combining the energy of young people with the experience of retirees—was formed to run daily operations. Each day, more than 20 volunteers help distribute meals, clean tables, and maintain a welcoming environment.

  Accessible to All in Need

The Yuhua Community Canteen opens daily from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., typically offering four dishes and one soup. Menus are designed to reflect local dietary traditions, including xianfan (flavoured rice), fenhou (rice vermicelli), braised noodles, vegetables, and light soups. The service places no age restrictions—anyone in need is welcome to dine.
