Quanzhou Evening News, Sept. 20 – Reported by Li Jing, Chen Xiaoyang, and Lin Wanqing
From September 19 to 22, the 2024 Dehua International Ceramic Culture Week took place in Dehua, Fujian Province. Themed “China White to the World”, this signature event is part of the implementation of the Five-Year Action Plan (2023–2027) for High-Quality Development of the ‘China White · Dehua Porcelain’ Industry. It aims to strengthen the “China White” brand through global influence, innovation, and market competitiveness. The ultimate goal: to grow the local ceramic industry cluster to over RMB 100 billion by 2027.
Centred around the 5th Dehua International Ceramic Expo, the event featured 33 complementary activities, including the 2nd World Ceramic Design Conference, the 8th “He Chaozong Cup” Industrial Design Awards, and the 2nd Fujian–Taiwan Ceramic Culture Festival.
This year’s edition introduced new highlights. The opening ceremony blended tradition with technology—using holographic projection and interactive drumming to showcase the synergy between heritage and innovation. Immersive experiences, such as live-action ceramic cosplay, traditional hairpin ornamentation, and Hanfu (Han-style clothing) try-ons, offered visitors a deep dive into China’s rich ceramic and cultural legacy.
The event attracted over ten leading ceramic brands from renowned ceramic hubs including the UK, Russia, Germany, Thailand, Italy, and Finland. Both the number of international exhibitors and exhibition space exceeded those of previous years. Buyers from countries like Thailand and the Philippines were invited, alongside 50 domestic trade associations from sectors including gifts, tea, hospitality, and tourism. The thematic exhibition “Rebirth of Three Realms” featured cutting-edge designer ceramics, including works inspired by the video game Black Myth: Wukong.
At the Dehua Ceramic Culture Week, exquisite ceramic cultural and creative products captivated visitors.
Dehua continues to promote the global presence of “China White.” In 2024, as the second year of the action plan unfolds, the local government has updated its support policies for private enterprises, launched talent recruitment programmes, and encouraged innovation through design competitions and smart manufacturing initiatives. Key projects, such as the National Archaeological Site Park of the Dehua Kiln and the new Ceramic Museum, are underway as part of an effort to integrate culture and tourism under the “One City, Hundreds of Museums” initiative.
Looking ahead, Dehua will continue to advance the "Three-Strength Strategy": expanding international influence, enhancing technological innovation, and boosting competitiveness, thereby ensuring the sustainable growth of the “China White · Dehua Porcelain” industry into a world-class ceramic powerhouse.
