Culinary Study Camp | Celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival with Min-nan Flavours and a Dopamine Dessert Party!
Time: 2025-06-05 08:39

On May 31 and June 1, the 2025 Quanzhou Culinary Study Camp: Dopamine Dessert Party took place at Jinhua People's Square in Quanzhou. Hundreds of young student reporters and their families, organised by Quanzhou Evening News, became little culinary explorers, embarking on a delicious Dragon Boat Festival adventure full of sweetness and creativity while enjoying the rich food traditions of southern Fujian.

At the event, the young participants wandered through stalls featuring local favourites such as Wu's Ginger Duck, Yuanhetang Preserves, and Shangguan Chestnut's signature Four-Fruit Sweet Soup. They got an up-close look at how beloved local delicacies are made.

When the clay pot lids were lifted at Wu's Ginger Duck stall, the fragrant aroma of sesame oil and ginger filled the air. Meanwhile, the owner of Yuanhetang captivated the young crowd with stories of the century-old brand's traditional preserved fruit craft. The liveliest spot was the Shangguan Chestnut stall, where the young reporters interacted with a cultural inheritor to learn the secrets behind the classic Four-Fruit Sweet Soup. With hands-on guidance, they became little dessert mixologists, creating their own custom recipes and experiencing firsthand the essence of Min-nan cuisine — winning hearts with fresh, quality ingredients.

This special event coincided with the Dragon Boat Festival and International Children's Day, adding an extra layer of festive fun. Some children made their own traditional herbal sachets, combining the scents of Chinese medicinal herbs with local folk customs, while others created colourful sand art bottles, layering vibrant sands to craft playful "rainbow memories."

Guided by the Quanzhou World City of Gastronomy Application Office and the Quanzhou Municipal Bureau of Commerce, this culinary study camp was hosted by Quanzhou Evening News with support from the Quanzhou Student Reporter Group, Quanzhou Taste Culinary Matrix, Quanzhou Culinary Economy Research Base, and the Quanzhou Catering and Culinary Association. The camp will continue to travel through Quanzhou's counties and districts, unlocking the flavours of each region's signature dishes and mapping out Quanzhou's diverse culinary landscape — from mountain specialities to coastal delights.
